statement  |  Up In Arms

Up In Arms began in 2013 as a yet another variation in my lengthy watercolor series of hands where I explored how the many ways hands exemplified what it is to be human. But I soon realized that in Up In Arms paintings are much more than a celebration of our physical capacities to hold things aloft. These paintings examine our relationships to our possessions, our jobs, our fears, our fantasies, our hopes, our talents, even our most mundane objects.

I believe the paintings can be quite powerful individually. Yet I always suspected that a dialog would occur between paintings once they are presented formally in a gallery. But not until recently did I realize how magical groupings of Up In Arms paintings would be. And groups of threes-triplets-seem to work best. The selection and order within the groups are very interchangeable, and each variation instantly creates a new dynamic, a different energy, a change in tension. —Scott Ponemone

Erin Fitzpatrick Jasmine

(Erin Fitzpatrick, Jasmine, 2015, oil on panel, 24 x 18 inches)

Erin Fitzpatrick, Baltimore native and graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art, began her current series of portraits in mid 2008. This body of work now contains hundreds paintings and drawings of notable artists, musicians, business people, Fitzpatrick's peers, and commissioned subjects. Exhibiting extensively in solo and group shows, she has gained collectors throughout the United States, Europe and Asia.

Portraits Patterns Plants: New Paintings by Erin Fitzpatrick, a collection of 18 - 48 inch oil paintings, depict models placed in interior spaces, layered with clashing patterns, textiles, and plants. Taking inspiration from interior design, fashion magazines, and textiles from around the world as well as her own collection, Fitzpatrick creates a scene rich with pattern in its wallpaper, upholstery, and rugs. Establishing a focal point amidst the layers of line shape and color, each carefully selected model is dressed in a wardrobe that is planned and curated specifically for each setting. A great departure from her earlier paintings, portraits in found settings, or devoid of background entirely, Portraits Patterns Plants... represents a visual culmination of Fitzpatrick's personal aesthetic, as well as her artistic pursuits in fiber arts and textile design.
