Rep Stage, the regional theatre in residence at Howard Community College, closes its 21st season with “The Fantasticks.” This classic love story is the world's longest-running musical. Hailed as a “gem” by The Wall Street Journal, The Fantasticks tells the story of a boy, a girl, and the wall built by their fathers to keep them apart.
The play’s mischievous and charming narrator, El Gallo, leads the audience through a journey of imagination, music, moonlight, and magic as the girl and boy fall in love, grow apart, and finally find their way back to each other after realizing the truth in El Gallo's words that "without a hurt, the heart is hollow." The famous score includes the classics “Try To Remember,” “They Were You,” and “Soon It's Gonna Rain.”
The creative team behind “The Fantasticks” is Tom Jones (books, lyrics, director) and Harvey Schmidt (music). Based on the play The Romancers (Les Romanesques) by Edmond Rostand, The Fantasticks began as a summer theater production at New York’s Barnard College. In 1960 it opened Off-Broadway, and with 17,162 record-breaking performances, eventually became the longest-running production in the history of stage and one of the most frequently produced musicals in the world.
