Koleda Celebrations with Orfeia & Svitanya
WHEN: Friday, January 3, 8 PM
WHERE: Creative Alliance, 3134 Eastern Ave., Baltimore
INFO & TIX»
Led by internationally renowned Bulgarian singer Tatiana Sarbinska, Orfeia is dedicated to sharing the women's rich a capella vocal traditions of Bulgaria and Eastern Europe, transporting audiences to the mountain villages of the Balkans, including Bulgaria, Russia, Serbia, Greece, Macedonia, and Georgia. Last fall, Orfeia performed in Sofia on Bulgarian TV and radio with Svitanya, the accomplished women's vocal ensemble from Philadelphia, which performs Eastern European folk and work songs, as well as contemporary compositions. The two groups reunite tonight in the Bulgarian Koleda tradition, where in the dim light of mid-winter, villagers honor the past, celebrate the present, and look forward to a healthy and abundant new year. Expect breathtaking harmonies and haunting melodies.
Elvis' Birthday Fight Club
WHEN: Saturday, January 4, 8 PM
INFO & TIX»
Flim-flam fisticuffs and hot ta-tahs equal a campy, wacky night of vaudeville and burlesque fit for The King's birthday. Round after blistering round, surreal and sublime fighters come out swingin'. The night also includes below-the-belt commentary from "Elvis" and femme-cee Kittie Glitter. When not fighting dirty, burlesque entertainers get the crowd's mojo working. Elvis-themed contests complete this irreverent, improv mash-up. While the 2014 fight card is top secret, past matches have included Col. Sanders vs. The Chicken, Godzilla vs. Bridezilla, and Congress vs. a clown. Lace up your gloves and don your blue suede shoes for hunka-hunka low-brow fun.
