Artistic director Alice Howes presents a night of diverse, inventive contemporary dance with an eight-member ensemble, which includes both professional dancers from the Baltimore community and advanced dance majors from Coppin State University. Howes' choreography focuses on the human condition, ideas of community and isolation, social justice, and the struggle to maintain relationships despite adversity. Howes' work also strives to express the often-neglected joyous quality inherent in movement.
Although completely contemporary, the work harkens back to the early days of modern dance when profound human expressiveness was paramount. This concert features Emptiness is All, a quartet developed from spoken poetry and its translation into American Sign Language. The ensemble also will perform Ação de Graças, "a joyful movement piece that celebrates community." Trajectory Dance Project performing members are Melinda Blomquist, Valerie Branch, Kiara Davis, Alice Howes, Frances James, Sarah Joy Stallsmith, Mari Travis, and Alicia Williams.
