CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS FROM THE LATINO COMMUNITY IN SE BALTIMORE @ CREATIVE ALLIANCE IN DECEMBER

Pinatas Navidenas: Mis RaicesPiñatas Navideñas y Posada
Christmas Traditions from Latin America

WHEN: November 23, 2013- January 18, 2014
WHERE:
Creative Alliance, 3134 Eastern Ave., Baltimore

Piñatas Navideñas y Posada celebrates and continues the joyous Christmas traditions of the Latino community in Southeast Baltimore. Working with local Mexican, Bolivian, Honduran, Nicaraguan, and Colombian tradition bearers—Mis Raíces, and our partners, Friends of Patterson Park, Consejo Hispano, Breath of God Lutheran Church, and Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish—Creative Alliance offers piñata-making workshops, an exhibition, videos, and a traditional "posada" procession culminating in a fiesta with song, dance, and piñata breaking.  (Image credit: Gustavo Serrano)

Creative Alliance offers workshops, an exhibition, and an evening of procession that culminates in a dance party and piñata breaking. The goal is to educate Baltimoreans, both native and immigrant, on the Latin traditions of piñata making, crèche scene making, and posada, or "lodging." The tradition bearers bring many generations of knowledge and cultural production from Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Bolivia, and Colombia. Piñatas Navideñas y Posada sustains and develops the tradition by educating 200 people in piñata making, organizing a secular version of the Catholic-based procession, and creates demonstration and historical videos for free distribution online.
