Events at Peabody

Peabody Dance students of all ages will appear in this year's Preparatory Spring Dance Performances of "Scenes from Sleeping Beauty," an abbreviated version of the famous fairy tale ballet with music by Tchaikovsky. The performances will take place on Sunday, May 19, at 1:00 and 4:00 pm, in Peabody's Miriam A. Friedberg Concert Hall. Tickets are $8. For tickets, call 410-234-4626.

Events at Peabody, May 13-19, 2013

A free recital by students in the Preparatory's Adult and Continuing Education (ACE) program will be held tomorrow, Tuesday, May 14, at 6:00 pm, in Peabody's Cohen-Davison Family Theatre.

The Peabody Children's Chorus, Howard County campus, will present "Les chanteurs de Peabody: French and American Songs" on Saturday and Sunday, May 18 and 19, at 3:30 pm. The performances will take place at the Jim Rouse Theater for the Performing Arts, Wilde Lake High School, 5460 Trumpeter Road, Columbia. Advance tickets, which are required, are $5. The Peabody Preparatory Spectacular—Take IV! will take place on Saturday, May 18, at 7:30 pm, at the Owen Brown Interfaith Center, 7246 Cradlerock Way, Columbia. Pianists Curtis Serafin and Hsiao-Ying Lin; harpist Alyssa Katahara; soprano Shafali Jalota; violinists Alan Zhang, Andrew Kwon, Diane Yang, and Ben Hoyt; violas Mingran Yu and Sarah Kim; cellists Hana Takemoto and Maki Kubota; and the Peabody Violin Choir, directed by Christian Tremblay, will perform works by Handel, Chopin, Fauré, and Joplin, among others. The winners of the Preparatory's Spring Honors Competition will perform at the Fran G. Zarubick Honors Recital on Sunday, May 19, at 3:00 pm, in Peabody's Leith Symington Griswold Hall. Harpist Anna Dunlap will perform Pierné's Impromptu-Caprice; pianist Abigail Lo will perform the "Largo-Allegro" movement from Beethoven's Sonata in D minor, Op. 31, No. 2, and Mendelssohn's Rondo Capriccioso, Op. 14; violinist Sarah Kim will perform the "Allemanda" from Bach's Sonata in D minor, BWV 1004, and de Sarasate's Habanera; and pianist Handong Park will perform Mendelssohn's Variations Serieuses, Op. 54.

Area events this week

The Sudden Pianist, a film by Baltimore filmmaker Richard Anderson featuring Composition Department Chair Michael Hersch, will have its Maryland premiere on Wednesday, May 15, at 6:30 pm. The event, sponsored by Arts, Entertainment, Media and Entrepreneurship (AEME) Affinity: Baltimore and the Baltimore Alumni Chapter, Johns Hopkins University, will take place at Mason Hall on JHU's Homewood campus, 3400 North Charles Street. Vibraphonist Warren Wolf, a Preparatory alumnus, will perform with saxophonist Antonio Hart, pianist Allyn Johnson, bassist Jeff Reed, and drummer John Lamkin III on Friday, May 17, at 8:00 and 9:30 pm, at An die Musik, 409 North Charles Street. For tickets, call 410-385-2638.

The Candlelight Concert Society will celebrate its 40th anniversary with a Ruby Jubilee gala concert on Saturday, May 18, at 3:00 pm. The Beijing Guitar Duo—Graduate Performance Diploma candidates Meng Su (PC '09, GPD '11) and Yameng Wang (MM '08 , GPD '11); the Dahlia Flute Duo—Mary Matthews (MM '10 Flute) and Melissa Wertheimer (MM '10 Piccolo); the Park Family Trio—Preparatory students Emily, Caleb, and Aaron Park; and Dvorák's "Dumky" Piano Trio—Christopher Shih, Nurit Bar-Josef, and faculty artist Amit Peled—will be among the performers at the event, which will take place at Howard Community College's Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center, 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia. Duo Amaral—Jorge Amaral (GPD '04, MM '06, Guitar) and Mia Pomerantz-Amaral (BM '06, MM '07, GPD '08, Guitar)—will perform works written or transcribed for classical guitar as part of the Sundays At Three concert series on Sunday, May 19, at 3:00 pm.
