Personalized Experience Lets Users Search & Share Contemporary Art Favorites


Beginning on Wednesday, November 14, The Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) launches an exciting new way to explore its newly renovated contemporary wing with BMA Go Mobile (, an innovative personalized mobile art guide with rich information and fresh perspectives on more than 100 objects

Like having the BMA in your pocket, BMA Go Mobile is a mobile website that is available anywhere, anytime, and on any device—including iPhones, Android, and Blackberry smartphones. Using the latest technologies, BMA Go Mobile expands upon the museum experience with content about every artwork on view in the contemporary wing, plus 33 exclusive video and audio interviews with artists, curators, and Baltimore-area experts. What makes the guide distinctive is that users are able to search by artwork, artist, era, or gallery, and can create their own connections through the curated content. The ability to save favorites, view later, or share with friends via social media like Facebook and Twitter also enhances both the on-site and post-museum experience.

“The Baltimore Museum of Art is in an exciting period of transformation that will engage 21st-century audiences with its internationally recognized collection in innovative and exciting new ways,” said Museum Director Doreen Bolger. “I am delighted that the BMA is expanding visitors’ access to the contemporary collection through this extraordinary resource.”

Highlights of BMA Go Mobile include commentary from artists Oliver Herring, Thomas Hirschhorn, and Joyce Scott, as well as Gertrude’s Chef John Shields, architect Diane Cho, and other participants. WYPR radio host Tom Hall narrates the guide and Baltimore-based musicians Lucas Lechowski, Jake Leckie, and Yeveto created original compositions to further enhance the mobile experience. Gallery maps and floor plans help visitors navigate their own self-created tours. Complimentary iPod Touches are also available for museum visitors to check out during their visit.

The BMA’s newly renovated contemporary wing reopens on November 18, completing the first phase of its $24.5 million renovation.  Visitors will discover 16 refreshed and revitalized galleries showcasing masterworks by Robert Rauschenberg and Andy Warhol alongside more than a dozen new acquisitions created by established and emerging artists working today. Highlights of the project include a major architectural intervention by artist Sarah Oppenheimer; three new exhibitions; a new black box gallery for light, sound, and moving image works; two new interactive galleries; and, of course, the museum’s first mobile art guide for the collection. 

BMA Go Mobile was developed by the museum’s Deputy Director of Education Anne Manning and Manager of Interpretation Gamynne Guillotte in partnership with Cogapp, a technology group that specializes in building websites, interactive installations, and next-generation mobile applications for museums. Sandy Goldberg, an independent media writer and producer, developed the video and audio content. BMA Go Mobile will expand with content for the American and African collections in 2014.
