The BMA kicks off its Contemporary Wing reopening with two free special events. Join us for The Big Day! with a variety of fun performances, live music, art demonstrations and art-making activities for visitors of all ages. Night owls and creative types who can’t wait to take in the Museum’s dynamic new art experiences can swing by the BMA Late Night on Saturday, November 17. This adventurous night includes live music and dancing, cutting-edge performances, a collaborative art project, cash bar and more.
Both events include new ways for visitors to experience the BMA’s newly transformed Contemporary Wing, which reopens on November 18 after a nearly two-year renovation. Highlights include the debut of three new exhibitions; a new black box gallery for light, sound and moving image works; two new interactive galleries; and BMA Go Mobile the museum’s first mobile art guide for the collection. Visitors will also discover masterworks from the collection by artists such as Robert Rauschenberg and Andy Warhol showcased alongside more than a dozen new works created by established and emerging artists working today. Get inspired by the art of today and make some of your own during this fun-filled day of performances, gallery activities, and art experiences for the young and young-at-heart. Enjoy music performed by the Great Recycled Orchestra Workshop; learn how to make kaleidoscopes, musical instruments, and sculptural hats; see Melissa Webb’s art-inspired fashion show with original music by Tim Nohe; or listen to readings by Olu Butterfly Woods’ Baltimore Citywide Youth Poetry Team. Find out how science meets art with demonstrations from robotics engineers and learn how artist Jessica Marx creates her fantastical hats. If you work up an appetite during the day, stop by Gertrude’s restaurant or visit some of Baltimore’s finest food trucks parked along Art Museum Drive.
BMA LATE NIGHT: CONTEMPORARY WING
Saturday, November 17, 9 PM to 12 AM
The BMA’s after-hours celebration invites you to be the first to check out the transformed Contemporary Wing. Visit the galleries after dark, dance the night away to live music by White Life, and take in cutting-edge performances by sound artist Tim Nohe. Express yourself with art projects led by Baltimore Prints Studio’s Kyle Van Horn or join in a collaborative art-making project designed by sculptor Maren Hassinger. Throughout the BMA, galleries will be buzzing with themed “Detours” and “Shorts.” These brief chats with Brent Crothers, Zvez Stojmirovic, Renee Van der Stelt, Kit Waskom Pollard, BMA staff, and others will provide new perspectives on art. Bring your smartphones and earbuds to access BMA Go Mobile’s artist videos and other features. Light bites and cash bar will be available until 11:30 PM.
