Every second Wednesday, Eubie Blake Center's 4th floor is alive with the sound of music. And while you may hear the strains of "My Favorite Things," this is no Von Trapp family concert. It's the monthly Jazz Jam Session hosted by musician Craig Alston. From 7:30 PM, instrumentalists and vocalists are invited to swap stories and business cards before getting down to the business of playing together.
"It's a non-competitive atmosphere...intense but laid back," Alston says of the event that is in its fourth month. "It's designed for playing jazz standards," the musician continues, "and to encourage people to network and form relationships." The central location of Eubie Blake Center draws a diverse crowd of musicians and the event's emphasis on playing the standards hopes to provide them with a common language.
It's a night free of the distractions you may find in a restaurant or club. It's about preserving the jazz art form and playing good music with no egos. Alston has high expectations and says Jazz Jam Sessions at Eubie have "endless possibilities". It's absolutely a must-hear event for music lovers of all types.
