WHERE: The Red Room at Normals Book Shop, 425 E. 31st St., Baltimore

@ The Pyramid Atlantic - DC 2009As a teenager Ben Miller played guitar and sang in Ann Arbor's woefully neglected garage/psych band Sproton Layer, who sowed the seeds discerning listeners would later reap in the forms of Mission of Burma, led by brother Roger Miller, and legendary "anti-rock" outfit Destroy All Monsters, featuring Ben and brother Larry. Later Ben would go on to play in Glen Branca's orchestra and later still found his own, the Sensorium Saxophone Orchestra.

This night we shall hear Miller under his Degeneration moniker, playing prepared guitar, producing a range of effects extending, according to his website, from "subtle atmospheres to violent sonic outbursts with an end result being a textured, layered, multiphonic soundscape." Looking forward to it!

stringWhat can we expect of Jenny Graf, for whom collaboration is of such vital importance, in this solo night flight? With groups Metalux, Harrius, Bride of No-No and others, Graf has consistently eluded consistency, gliding between genres, maintaining a vague backbone of abrasive, hallucinatory beauty. By her able lonesome she is every bit as unpredictable but reliably thoughtful. Whatever the trimmings, expect "wet, down-in-your-guts music."

Its constituent members having wowed past Red Room audiences as soloists, newish local power-trio Hobo's Greed (Andrew Storrs, Charles Dube and Max Eilbacher) retreat from performance-based modes of presentation in favor of creeping, scabrous synthesizer investigations, in which we detect resonances both from postwar Classical Electronic Music and the contemporary Underground. My brain wants me to type "Harsh '70s Unreality."

Very much looking forward to this one and hope to see you there!
