DREW DANIEL & JOHN WIESE @ THE RED ROOM
WHEN: Thursday, April 26, The doors will open at 8:30 and the show will begin at 9:00
WHERE: Normals Book Shop, 425 E. 31st Street, Baltimore
What a pleasure to bring to the Red Room these two distinguished manhandlers of sound, these luminaries of darkness:
Local Drew Daniel is best known as one half of "pop concrète" act Matmos (with Red Room Collective member M.C. Schmidt, who did not book this show), known to a different set of people as an English professor at Johns Hopkins University, and thirdly as "experimental house music" performer The Soft Pink Truth. None can say what he will be blessing us with this night, but it's easy to imagine that it will be colorful and gross and smart.
Los Angeles-based John Wiese is an impossibly prolific noise composer and performer, having recently celebrated the release of his 100th (!) 7-inch, in addition to his scads of LPs, cassettes and CDs. His range of collaborators is similarly astonishing, in addition to his regular work with groups Sissy Spacek and LHD, he has worked with Sunn O))), Evan Parker, Merzbow, C. Spencer Yeh, Wolf Eyes, Kevin Drumm and many, many more. Extremity is the name of his game as a solo performer—expect abrupt dynamics, sharp edges and general disquiet verging on sonic assault, all precisely controlled.
