EVENTS @ THE PEABODY THIS WEEK

Franz LisztLiszt 200, Peabody's celebration of the bicentennial of pianist and composer Franz Liszt (1811-1886), begins on Tuesday, Sept. 27, with a performance of the Piano Concerto No. 1 in E-flat major by faculty artist Alexander Shtarkman with the Peabody Symphony Orchestra, led by Hajime Teri Murai. The 8:00 PM concert will take place in Peabody's Miriam A. Friedberg Concert Hall. Shtarkman, five of his piano faculty colleagues, and faculty artist Ah Young Hong, soprano, will present a Liszt Extravaganza on the following Tuesday, Oct. 4, also at 8:00 PM. Tickets for these concerts are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors, and $5 for students with ID. To purchase tickets, call the Peabody Box Office at 410.234.4800.

TONIGHT
Faculty artist Joe Burgstaller, trumpet, and pianists Julian Lawrence Gargiulo (MM ’97) and Hector Martignon will present a performance master class for all instruments tonight, Monday, Sept. 19, at 7:00 PM in Room 206C (Conservatory Building).

ALSO THIS WEEK
The first concert in this season's Sylvia Adalman Chamber Series will be tomorrow, Tuesday, Sept. 20, at 8:00 PM. An Evening with Joe Burgstaller and Friends will feature Burgstaller, a faculty artist and former trumpeter with the Canadian Brass; pianists Julian Lawrence Gargiulo (MM ’97), Hector Martignon, and Master of Music candidate John Wilson; cellist Michael Kannen and bassist Michael Formanek, both faculty artists; and undergraduate percussionists Saul Green and Byung Kang. Tickets for the concert, in Miriam A. Friedberg Concert Hall, are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors, and $5 for students with ID. To purchase tickets, call the Peabody Box Office at 410.234.4800.

Several Peabody musicians will perform in the opening Chamber Music by Candlelight concert of Community Concerts at Second on Sunday, Sept. 25, at 7:30 PM. Conservatory faculty member Lura Johnson, piano, will perform Fiddle Sonata by Mark O'Connor with violinist Ellen Pendleton Troyer. Violinist Qing Li (PC ’91, BM ’92) and Doctor of Musical Arts candidate Sheng-Yuan Kuan, piano, will perform Sergei Prokofiev's Sonata in F minor, Op. 80, No. 1. FREE NOONTIME CONCERTS
Conservatory piano students Bo Kyung Kim, Yeji Na, Sejoon Park, and Mika Sasaki will perform at this week's free Thursday Noon recital in Miriam A. Friedberg Concert Hall.

BALTIMORE BOOK FESTIVAL
The 2011 Baltimore Book Festival will fill Mount Vernon Place with literary vendors this Friday and Saturday from 12:00 to 8:00 PM and this Sunday from 12:00 to 7:00 PM. The Peabody Institute and the George Peabody Library will be open to the public during the festival, offering book sales (in the George Peabody Library all three days and in the Friedheim Music Library on Saturday), talks, tours, and family activities.

UPCOMING CONCERTS

  • Hajime Teri Murai will lead the Peabody Symphony Orchestra in a performance of works by Liszt (see above), Mussorgsky, and Torke on Tuesday, Sept. 27, 8:00 PM in Miriam A. Friedberg Concert Hall.
  • Faculty artist Ah Young Hong, soprano, will join members of the Conservatory piano faculty to present a Liszt Extravaganza on Tuesday, Oct. 4, 8:00 PM in Miriam A. Friedberg Concert Hall.
  • The Peabody Concert Orchestra, led by Hajime Teri Murai, will perform works by Haydn, Dvor├ík, and Bernstein on Wednesday, Oct. 5, 8:00 PM in Miriam A. Friedberg Concert Hall.
